“The Toilet is Not a Trash Can” – Shelbyville Waste Water Department

The toilet is not a trash can. Your toilet is designed to handle human waste and toilet paper only.  Your pipes and our system were not designed to handle other materials that should be thrown in the trash can.

Do not put Q-tips, cotton balls, makeup swabs, baby wipes, diapers, sanitary napkins, tampons and applicators, condoms, Kleenex tissues, adult wipes, plastic wrappers, and sanitizing wipes in the toilet, sink or drain.  Doing so causes a great expense to you to hire plumbers to clean your lines.  It also causes a great expense to the City to have people clean the city sewer lines, remove and clean clogged pumps, even replace pumps with larger expensive grinder pumps.

This ends up costing you the citizens more money as we have to pass these costs on to you through increased wastewater utility rates.  With your awareness and help we can work together to avoid this problem and unnecessary expense.

PLEASE DON’T USE YOUR TOILET AS A TRASH CAN.
